Before the cleanup

When can cleanup start after a death or crime?

After police release the scene and, where a death is involved, the medical examiner's investigators have taken the person into their care.

Should I clean it myself?

It is not recommended. Blood and other fluids can carry bloodborne pathogens, and the waste needs proper disposal.

Who investigates deaths in Kent County?

The Kent County Office of the Medical Examiner investigates sudden, unexpected, accidental and violent deaths.

What should I do while I wait?

Close the door, keep children and pets away, and do not throw anything out. Note the police report number.

Cost and payment

How much does biohazard cleanup cost?

There is no flat price. Size of the area, the materials affected, how long things were left and the amount of waste all change it. Ask for a written estimate.

Does homeowner's insurance cover it?

Some policies do. Ask your insurer before the work starts.

Does Michigan's crime victim program cover cleanup?

It lists crime scene cleanup in the home or vehicle where the crime occurred among the costs it may cover. The crime must be reported to police and insurance used first.

How long do I have to apply?

Generally five years from the crime (MCL 18.355).

This line

Who will I be talking to?

An independent cleanup company that covers your ZIP code, reached through a call-routing service.

Is my call recorded?

Calls may be recorded for quality and billing. See the privacy policy.

Which places are covered?

Grand Rapids and the cities on the areas page, by ZIP code.

Why is this called bio hazard cleanup in some places?

Both spellings mean the same thing: cleanup of blood, bodily fluids and other material that can carry disease.
